Sex buyers' understanding of consent in the 'sex industry'

Punter reviews are comments which sex buyers post in online forums to rate their encounters with women in the ‘sex industry’. These reviews involve commenting not just on the sexual encounter, but on women’s physical appearance, sexual performance and personality. These reviews are quite revealing not just of men’s attitudes toward women, but of their views of consent.

In this podcast, we speak to Dr Alessia Tranchese, Associate Professor in Language, Feminism and Digital Media at the University of Portsmouth. She shares talk to us about a recent study she did on punter reviews, where she found that sex buyers’ descriptions of sexual encounters often breach the UK’s legal criteria of consent.
Alessia Tranchese is Associate Professor in Language, Feminism and Digital Media at the University of Portsmouth, UK, and previous Research Fellow at the Centre for Advanced Internet Studies, Germany. Her areas of research are violence against women in the media, online misogyny, and pornography. Her latest book on the representation of VAW in the British press was published by Palgrave in March 2023.
